OMEKA

Omeka is amongst the most advanced, easy to use, easy to deploy digital heritage systems available. Whilst it continues to use standard LAMP architecture it comes pre-build with an array of ontological support, and being opensource is relatively easy to contibute towards to meet the needs of future Semantic Web Implementation Models. I've been frustrated by the lack of support for basic functions needed by small historical societies, such as the ability to link via FOAF or similar methods; records that show simlar concepts; for example, people. These methods can be developed and implemented by developers as to exend the platforms capabilities. The system is easy to deploy, easy to use and easily extendable. Whilst it is perhaps the best starting point (beyond simply using wordpress) omeka meets the mixture between accessibility and functionality.

Fedora + Project Hydra,

Project Hyrda is a sophistocated repository solution being build, principally, by a group of US based universities, libraries and institutions. The platform is not simple to deploy, but is extremely advanced in its functionality including complete metadata, media-server, user and realated capabilities.

Incorporating an advanced faceted search system, opensource media server, authentication, asset management and presentation systems project hydra integrates fedora, an advanced data repository and RDF store allowing content to be addresssed by disparet systems more easily.

The system is also compatible with OAI-PMH - or the method used to share resources between digital resource libraries. Deploying a Hydra based environment is a sophistocated job. There are two main variants of the system, the first being the primary build - incorporates LDAP AUTH; the other removes this feature is easier to deploy and is called Sufia.
